چکیده

The development of robust, accurate, real-time cognitive state gauges, based upon operators’ physiological data, is an essential pre-requisite to realizing performance improvements through augmented cognition technology. However, gauges that can identify undesirable cognitive states are only useful if corrective action can be taken when the gauges detect problematic states. Thus, in designing augmented cognition systems, it is equally essential to develop mitigation strategies that help operators avoid and/or move out of cognitive states that can cause degradations in operator performance. This report addresses three aspects of mitigation strategy design that need to be considered when deciding what systems should do in response to changes in operator cognitive state: 1) interaction of mitigation strategies with general human-computer interaction principles; 2) task-domain dependency; and 3) correlation between mitigation strategies and specific combinations of gauge values. The treatment of each issue is grounded in specific examples from the design and implementation of multiple augmented cognition systems.

Broad - Spectrum Mitigation and the Cognitive Neurobiological Interface : considering biological rhythms in Augmented Cognition

Brain-computer interface design relies upon mitigating human performance. Recent attempts have focused mainly on real-time cognitive processing. This paper will consider biological rhythms as a longer-term and more dynamic factor for determining human performance in such systems. To characterize the contribution of such neurobiological phenomena to human performance, biological rhythms will be ...

Extending the Reach of Augmented Cognition To Real-World Decision Making Tasks

The focus of this paper is on the critical challenge of bridging the gap between psychophysiological sensor data and the inferred cognitive states of users. It is argued that a more robust behavioral data collection foundation will facilitate accurate inferences about the state of the user so that an appropriate mitigation strategy, if needed, can be applied. The argument for such a foundation ...

New Optimal Observer Design Based on State Prediction for a Class of Non-linear Systems Through Approximation

This paper deals with the optimal state observer of non-linear systems based on a new strategy. Despite the development of state prediction in linear systems, state prediction for non-linear systems is still challenging. In this paper, to obtain a future estimation of the system states, initially Taylor series expansion of states in their receding horizons was achieved to any specified order an...

Consistency Constraint Allocation in Augmented Lagrangian Coordination

Many engineering systems are too complex to design as a single entity. Decomposition-based design optimization methods partition a system design problem into subproblems, and coordinate subproblem solutions toward an optimal system design. Recent work has addressed formal methods for determining an ideal system partition and coordination strategy, but coordination decisions have been limited to...

AN OPTIMAL CUCKOO SEARCH-FUZZY LOGIC CONTROLLER FOR OPTIMAL STRUCTURAL CONTROL

An optimal semi-active Cuckoo- Fuzzy algorithm is developed to drive the hydraulic semi-active damper for effective control of the dynamic deformation of building structures under earthquake loadings, in this paper. Hydraulic semi-active dampers (MR dampers) are semi active control devices that are managed by sending external voltage supply. A new adaptive fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is introd...
